I am Raffat Khan, a new counselling intern at the Miramichi Counselling Centre.
I have lived in Miramichi for the last twenty-two years and am eager to help my community as a counsellor.
I finished my Bachelor of Science(B.Sc. Psychology) from the International Islamic Online University in 2018. I joined Yorkville University’s Behavioural Science program to complete my Masters of Arts in Counselling and Psychotherapy (MACP). I recently completed all the course components and am ready for my practical experience as a counsellor.
In the MACP program, I learned and gained mastery in helping clients with depression, anxiety, trauma, academic issues, relationship problems and other emotional and behavioural issues.
I am ready to counsel clients individually or in group sessions to help them overcome dependencies, adjust to life, or make positive changes. I will guide clients in developing skills or strategies for their problems by developing and implementing treatment plans based on evidence-based knowledge and experience gained throughout my coursework. I will help coordinate community resources and implement psychological interventions and experiences to ensure clients' community integration. Additionally, being a person of colour and an immigrant woman to Canada, I have first-hand experience with the challenges and barriers newcomers and refugees face while integrating into Canadian society.
I prefer but am not limited to using CBT, DBT, ACT, Solution Focused therapy, trauma therapy, motivational interviewing and/or other appropriate modalities for a more personalized approach. My goal during this internship is to provide a non-judgmental, safe space for my clients and encourage clients to express their true feelings and discuss what is happening in their lives. I am willing to help them develop insight into themselves or their relationships with sensitivity to the cultural and individual needs of the clients and families served. I am eager to introduce my clients anger management techniques, relaxation skills, impulse control, social skills, emotional coping skills and functional living skills.
